Canada, Climate Change and Education

Opportunities for Public and Formal Education

About the Survey

In 2019, Learning for a Sustainable Future in collaboration with Dr. Ellen Field, Faculty of Education, Lakehead University, undertook a national climate change education survey.

The nationwide study of 3,196 Canadians entitled, Canada, Climate Change and Education: Opportunities for Public and Formal Education, establishes benchmarks  of Canadians’ knowledge and understanding of climate change, their perspectives on the importance of climate change and its risks, and views on the role of schools and climate change education. It also provides the first comprehensive snapshot of climate change educational practice in Canada.  The results are presented both nationally and from provincial/regional jurisdictions.

The report paints a broad picture of Canadians’ understanding of climate change. It reveals that Canadians are deeply concerned about climate change, and  desire more education about the issue, both inside and outside of schools. Schools and curricula, the study revealed, are falling short of Canadians’ expectations for learning about climate change. Visit the Executive Summary or the National Report to learn more about the survey findings.
